Thanks Mary

I get a kick out of smiling a big smile and saying HI! to runners and walkers and watching their stunned reaction!

It only takes about a week and then they smile back without a delay - it's too funny.

Hi Hugh,

Just read your 12 for 2012 posting. Many of the points truly resonate with me and I am making "Be Here", Admit Fault First" and "Declutter my Life" my focus and priority for 2012 and have already started on the "declutter" this year and considerably benefited from the positive impact of doing so.

Take Care and best wishes for 2012.

Hi Hugh. I've enjoyed reading your 12 for 12. My three? Be here. It's a great one. Complete things. Declutter my life. That's it, just the three. My life is already very blessed so that I aready do some of the others, like "smile more often". I love going for a run in the morning and smiling and saying "good morning" to the runners and walkers that I see. It makes me happy when they respond, and I count how many replies I get. It's a small thing, but it's an easy one for me.
I'll keep you posted on my success.
Cheers!

Nancy,

Here's my best advice for de-cluttering.
1. Don't put it on a list, instead do 5 minutes right now.
2. Don't move, remove. Have the recycle bin and garbage bag at the ready and be ruthless. (read Chapter 1 and 2 from Gretchen Rubin's Great book The Happiness Project)
3. Celebrate the small changes.

This habit is one that always makes me happy!

Hi Nancy

Thanks for the note!

I think that there are so many things that we undervalue as we chase after more "stuff" to fill our day, life and mind.
I was listening to Jian Ghomeshi's interview (www.CBC.ca/Q) this AM with Clay Johnson (author "Information Diet") and getting even more inspiration to have less in my mental RAM.

Stick with it and (as always) celebrate the results!

Need to make more time to declutter - guess I need to put it on the project list and tackle a piece at a time. Have you found any other ways to motivate yourself to tackle office clutter?

Thanks Hugh!

Thanks Tammy

I'm with you. Sometimes we just need to be back to the simplicity of silence. I know if I keep the 'buzz' on all day it feels like I haven't had a break.

Here's to a bit a silence in our life!

I am loving these quick, uplifting notes, Hugh :)

I have been practicing "empty the mental RAM". I cancelled the internet at home (and don't have a tv). I don't even turn music on when I get home. It's incredible what a restful place my home has become!

Hope you are well.

Thanks Ed.

I think this is such a great example of how one activity is not an addition, but a subtraction from our load. I find the same thing with raking the leaves, walking the dog and taking my girls shopping. These are such simple activities that they make my day easier, even though they are on the list as "task."

Thanks for sharing.

Good mrnign Hugh,

re: Empty the mental RAM - I've discovered that coaching my son's hocky team is a great mental release.

I find myself thinking about the team, rather than my work during the evenings and week-ends. It is a very good mental break/holiday.

Nigel

This is great! What a cool way to challenge yourself and learn from someone new. All too often I have thought about talking with someone that my intuition pointed me to but haven't - opportunity lost. When I have reached out it has always been positive.

My MANTRA for the year... to create "betterment"... not only for myself but for others... it's a two-way street.
My PLAN... to invite someone (preferably a stranger) each day to tell me "why they are "interesting"".
The STAGE... a coffee bar. This morning I asked if I could share someone's table. I was invited to do so... and somewhat bravely I brazenly asked the young woman what made her interesting! At first she said there was nothing. Challenged again she smiled and started her story. We chatted for almost half-an-hour... what made her special was her heritage, her work (which she loves) where she lives and more.
The OUTCOME...as we parted it was as if we were old friends smiling and laughing. Forget tweeting, texting... let's get back to "authentic" conversation... it makes the world go by. It made a great start to my day and perhaps hers. I never did get to read the newspaper I had purchased... likely full of less cheery conversation!

Thanks Dana

This is great and I'm now feeling guilty that I drive my daughters to school. I must stop feeling so sympathetic about the 30 lbs of books and bulging packpacks.

Thanks for this!

I don't believe in new years resolutions. I believe in changing habits though and i'm always tweaking them. My new habit now that i'm working again is NOT to drive my daugther to school then drive to work.. We walk. It requires a little more planning and organization to fit in everything but so far it's working. We get a 25-30 minute chat on our way to her school and some exercise. It's also teaching her good habits like time management, exercise and not to be dependant on a car. When my daughter is with her mom, i get up super early to get to crossfit class (you wanna get in shape fast, try it out), have a shower at work and then be at my desk 10 mnutes early. It requires getting up between 5:30-6:00am and be in bed no later than 10:00pm. All new habits for a new job and a new year but i would have done it all anyway even if it happened in June. :)

Rob

Thanks for this! I know that the SMART acronym is often dismissed as being hackneyed, but it still works.

Without wanting to break the mold, here is a provocative variation: Change the R to "Risky", in other words, make sure that the goals is a stretch goal that creates some tension from where you are (present state) to where you want to go (future state). Jim Collins does a great treatment of this in Good to Great when he talks about the race to the moon with Kennedy.

Thanks again for this.

Thanks Susan

What a great way to start the day! I find that if there is one quick way to shift my mood it is to look at what I can do for others. Thanks for sharing.

Speaking of goals - one of my key learnings is to always make my goals SMART. Specific, measureable, achievable, relevant and timely. In all the goal setitng workshops I've conducted, its one of the strongest success factors I've seen - otherwise, our goals tend to drift away and just be dreams. The relevance is key - it tells us WHY we want to achieve this goal - why do we want to lose weight, to gain financial success, etc?

I know what you mean(!) I am finding that the down times with my feet up reading a good book or walking my dog (instead of pounding off a one hour training run) are more fulfilling than ever.

Thanks Chelsea

I love the anchor to brushing your teeth. This is a brilliant way to make your habits happen everyday by combining them with something you know you will do! Thanks for sharing that (I'm thinking there are loads of other daily routines we could anchor our affirmations to.)

One of my intentions for this new year is to, when I brush my teeth in the morning, set a daily intention. Today's intention is to "do it with a smile". I woke up very tired and knew I would probably be frowning and impatient all day so I've intended to go through my day with a smile.

The second part of this annual intention is, while I brush my teeth at night, to be grateful for something specific that happened that day. Last night it was for an opportunity to socialize with some friends.

My New Year's resolution is simple ... get healthier. Now that i'm 56, I find my body discovering new little aches and pains as a result of my usually busy lifestyle. I have resolved to take better care of my poor ol' body and hopefully fend off some of these minor glitches. Better nutrition, more exercise, and celebrating the good times. Thanks for your tips Hugh! Jan

To wake up each morning and choose to be a blessing every day to someone else. No matter my mood, helping someone else (which may be as simple as a smile or giving them the parking spot I wanted) will improve!

Hi Renee

Tethering your iphone is pretty handy, especially when you are in public spaces and want to work on your macbook. Here' s a link that will walk you through it. The neat thing is that once you have done it once (like with WIFI) the next time you macbook will recognize the phone and link it up.

Great post, Hugh! I'm still smiling, a left over from the laugh about the book. I will be checking out the Evernote and Dragon apps for my iPhone. But how do I tether my phone and turn it into a modem for my MacBook Pro?

A Happy and Healthy 2012!

Thanks Jan
I just added the Dragon app to my iphone - great value for a free app. It transcribes as I talk and then I can simply send the note to my self. The other time saver I use a lot is to send a digit pic of the flip charts to a trusted typing service. I have the draft doc in my InBox by the next AM to do the final editing on. That way I'm spending my time on crafting a solid presentation for the client, instead of transcribing.
It all helps!

I think that as amazing as Dropbox, Evernote are we need to keep remembering that the best tools are the ones that are all around us, like a well written book.

Glad it brought you a good laugh!

Great blog post Hugh! I'v been using Evernote and Dropbox now for about a year and agree completely with your comments. However, it took me a minute to catch the ' A book' item at the end, but then had a good laugh at myself for the time lag between "what is he talking about?' to 'oh, of course, a book'. Just finished the Steve Jobs bio. What a great read.
Cheers,

Great tips and Tools Hugh!
I have to add one...Dragon Naturally Speaking - voice recognition software. Think I spent about $100 but worth it. Put on the headphones and dictate while your words appear on screen. Best use - for capturing ideas without editing and transcribing flipcharts. Takes a bit to get it set up but a real time saver once you do.
All the best for 2012!
Cheers

Great point about presentations Hugh - it's always best to think about what the audience wants and get out of your own head. I'm taking your advice to a conference I have coming up.

On another note: a colleague came by my desk yesterday and said "what's wrong with your inbox?" It was basically empty, thanks to one of your workshops I attended years ago, and she did not understand how it was possible! Thank you for that! : ) Siobhan

Hey Hugh. Camping with a group of kids right now. Just checking in to home. Took a moment to read your post as I had a haron come swoop down by the water where we are camping/hiking. Love your rich nuggets of wisdom. The students were actually saying today how nice it was to just completely unplug. Work has to be done, communication must be had, but awesome reminder of the time and place for it. Signing off. Some animal game to be played! Sqeeky squeak Sarah

Thanks Shelley

I agree, it is a little like ADD. In fact Dr. Ed Hallowell (author of books like Crazy Busy) does claim to see many people that exhibit signs of ADD in their adult years as a result of their frenetic lifestyle.

The good news is that the anecdote is simple: stop doing once in a while throughout the day and get back to reflective thinking and single-tasking!

Hugh, I love the analogy that a pilot doesn't get the plane in the air and then plan his flight! It is simply amazing how many Okanagan business people and owners seem to get their day going and then plan their day/ week. Thanks for the reminder to stop getting off track by bright and shiny objects- who knew that we all have a bit of ADD... I will stay true to my business objectives and plan my boulders accordingly.

Thanks Tom

I think that every time we can get a team to 'look in the same' direction is a good thing. I also like to check in with a team after a process like this and get feedback on the process itself. A simple question like "Was this a useful process for you?" followed by "How do you think this will help us?" can be a great wrap up to the conversation.

Thanks for the comment.

Thanks Hendrik.

I notice that sometimes the simple processes are the most effective. That double benefit that I see constantly happen is that the team is more effective and the awareness of expectations has been raised.

Thanks for the comment.
