Client Notes

Test site for WAO 26 July 2010

Hi and Welcome to the special follow up resource site for staff of Workers’ Advisers Offices.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oflxp3jvo34

By now you are back at your desk or home and wondering how to take what we talked about in the seminar and put it to action. To be fair, I’m sure that some things have already started to change. For one, you are hopefully thinking about time differently (you are, right?).

Rather than fire more materials at you, I want to support you with some ideas on how to use what you already have.

  1. As a start I would recommend that you quickly review the program we did together and pull out just 3-5 changes that you want to make. It could be to turn work off on the way home, to create an Action Plan on Fridays or to reduce the chance of interruptions distracting you through the day. Whatever it is, create a short list.
  2. Next I would look for one system change and one habit change and work on them this week. Next week you can revisit your list and again select one or two areas to focus on.
  3. Lastly I would post these commitments near your computer (I know, I know that in the seminar I was ranting about ‘clearing the clutter’ – you can put a note on your computer if you like). Every day for one week commit to working on these changes. You will certainly notice a difference!

MORE GOOD STUFF…

Here is a great summary of ways to reduce your time on email and everything else – it’s a quick read. Pick one or two changes and do them now.

Also, when you go to do your Time Audit (even one day doing this will put you at the top of the pack for people who are conscious of the time and where it goes) here is a neat spreadsheet that tracks your progress through the day. Watch the numbers changes at the bottom.

If you are new to creating folders and rules in Outlook you can use this link (it’s to Microsoft) to learn how to do it.

Here’s a short summary of how I do it:

1) create one or more folders in Outlook first (just right click on your InBox)

2) follow the instructions on this link (see “Create rule from scratch). Once you select the new email, just right click to “Create Rule” and select the “from…” and “Move the item to folder:” boxes. Select the folder you want then click OK three times.

I will keep adding to these resources. But in the meantime, tell me what you liked and what you are finding valuable.

COOL TOOLS…

OK, I couldn’t resist. Here are some very cool tools that I have come to value and you might like as well.

Roboform

This neat software sites on your browser and watches for new usenames and passwords. It will keep track of these for you and also in the ‘SafeNotes’ keep any other private information (like credit card info, passport numbers, etc.). The free version lets you keep up to 10 sets of information. The Pro version is unlimited and inexpensive. This also links to my iphone app and is brilliant – I have up-to-date information anywhere I go (it also means I don’t carry around as much plastic – like airmiles cards, medical cards, phone calling cards etc.)

ToDo

This great little list organizer that has an app for the iphone. The online connection is to http://www.toodledo.com/. So far it’s been seamless. The sync between Outlook and ToDo is great and the presentation is clean and simple. There are lots of these on the market, but so far this is a favourite.
