It’s all about the Small Stuff – follow up materials
Hi and thanks for visiting my site!
These are follow up notes for the “It’s all about the Small Stuff” presentation.![]()
It is always exciting for me to present my materials and thoughts to groups. And even more exciting when those ideas are used!
The days after the event are the best times to narrow your focus on just a few changes that you are going to make. And I have found that it is always better to create some action in a few areas right away to see the benefit from the programs you attended.
Here’s an approach that I use:
1. Start with one or two areas that you want to focus on. For each one get specific. Write down the exact change that you want to make (for example “Start my day working on Boulders only”, or “Turn work off on the way home and practice being present with my family”).
2. Post this note where it is visible (in your day timer, your Action Plan, a screen saver, etc.) and start everyday with by focusing on how you will make that change.
3. Notice the changes. Our brains loves proof so look for evidence that your changes are working. Remind yourself that your effort is creating a positive reward.
4. Repeat. All too often we drop a commitment or switch to some new strategy before the results are fully realized or the habit is created. Give yourself one month to truly see the benefits. Then decide.

I can not take part now in discussion – there is no free time. I will be free – I will necessarily express the opinion.
Thanks Allan. It’s seems like such a simple thing – to shift to a focus on the week, but it consistently proves to make a big difference to productivity and group discussions.
Thanks for the feedback!
Hugh
What I do differently (Getting things done): Week plans and Outlook appointments for work. Also key staff are now advising others of weekly priorities on Sharepoint to engage others with weekly planning. I enjoyed your session in Kananaskis WAY BACK in May.
