52 Free Time Management Tips!

Take a Hike!

I am constantly surprised by how many people in the audiences I speak to work through their breaks, park themselves for hour after hour at their computer and go through the day without moving! Of course they “move”; but they aren’t moving enough to stimulate the body’s natural endorphins.030530_1906_0511_xshsa-fb

Endorphins are your body’s ‘feel-good’ chemicals and they are released when you exercise. Endorphins also are responsible for preventing diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. And best of all they are great for lifting our mood (even on a cloudy day, or when your schedule is packed).

Movement also stimulates the release of neuro-transmitter dopamine, adrenaline and serotonin. These chemicals work together to make us feel better and give us more energy. It is like having a natural refuelling station in us, just waiting to be turned on.

So, what are you doing at work to tap into this perfect ‘recharge’? It could be as simple as walking down the street to get a coffee, instead of going to the machine in the office, or taking your lunch to a nearby park. Many people have a great habit of standing and stretching every 20-30 minutes. You might not get the full benefit of exercise, but you are getting some movement and benefit.

For one week adopt a new habit: spend at least 15 minutes in brisk walking during a break or lunch. Make sure you record this in your calendar and keep yourself honest.
Sometimes good results are about doing less to get more. Have fun with this!
